    Matti Klein meets Tayfun Schulzke

    Orania.Stage

The impromptu yet delicately honed musical symbiosis between Matti Klein on the Steinway grand piano and Tayfun Schulzke on a variety of percussion instruments from around the world seems to emerge from only one source. The two have been connected by a musical friendship for many years, which is celebrated this evening with a selection of jazz pop and soul classics as well as improvisations. A soulful evening, sometimes joyful and sometimes thoughtful, just like life outside of Orania.Berlin’s windows.

In addition to studio work (e.g., Seeed), Tayfun Schulzke can also be heard as a percussionist with renowned artists such as Meret Becker, Culcha Candela or Jan Delay and at international festivals. Matti Klein became known as a founding member of the popular German jazz-funk band Mo'Blow and tours internationally with his equally celebrated Matti Klein Soul Trio as well as the Brazilian soul icon Ed Motta.

    Simon Paterno & Band

    Orania.Stage

Simon Paterno was soaking up the flair of Broadway and Gospel music early on after moving to New York to study Performing Arts. The soulful voices of Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder had always inspired him just as artists from the golden Jazz era.

The German-Filipino published his first EP 'Head To Toes' in 2014 and performed his original songs as supporting act of Earth, Wind and Fire at the Jazzopen Stuttgart and - unknowingly - at the same New Yorker club in which Donny Hathaway had recorded his legendary live album.

Although raised in Hamburg, Simon has been a 'Berliner' for four years, worked together with some of the city's finest Soul- and gospel singers and was part of the anniversary season of The Voice of Germany in 2020.

    Johannes Wehrle meets Florian Kolditz
    Tribute to Elliott Smith

    Orania.Stage

When Berlin based pianist, keyboardist and composer Johannes Wehrle fell in love with the music of Elliott Smith at the beginning of the millennium, he was still a teenager. While the tragic death of Elliott happened soon after this discovery, the sound and the songs became an important companion in the following decades. While diving deep into music, studying Jazz Piano in Weimar, touring across Europe with musical groups across all Genres, the compositions of Elliott never stopped fascinating him.

This led to the idea of performing the songs in a different way; by writing instrumental interpretations for a stripped-down duo setting, Johannes Wehrle takes the melodies to the Steinway piano, while Florian Kolditz translates the oscillating guitar pickings to the world of four strings. Together the two go beyond the originals by reharmonizing and improvising, exploring what else is hidden inside the music of the great songwriter.
